L’AATC est une association professionnelle nationale autoréglementée. Elle est composée de 604 membres répartis aux quatre coins du Canada (et du monde) qui ont une expertise en arpentage, en photogrammétrie, en télédétection, en géodésie, en hydrographie et en systèmes d’information foncière à référence spatiale.

Seuls les arpenteurs des terres du Canada, qui sont titulaires d’un permis de pratique de l’AATC, sont autorisés à pratiquer l’arpentage foncier sur les terres du Canada qui comprennent essentiellement les réserves autochtones, les parcs fédéraux, toutes les terres dans les trois territoires et la zone extracôtière qui n’est pas sous juridiction provinciale.

L’Association est fière d’être membre du Conseil canadien d’examinateurs pour les arpenteurs-géomètres (CCEAG) qui a vu le jour cette année. Ce Conseil est responsable d’établir, d’évaluer et de certifier les diplômes d’études des personnes qui posent leur candidature en vue de devenir des arpenteurs-géomètres et/ou des professionnels dans le domaine de la géomatique. We Create Geospatial Products


GeoBC, creates and manages geospatial information and products, as well as provides consultation services across all natural resource sector (NRS) agencies. While this may sound like a complicated and purely technical role, in practice the group has four very tangible areas of focus directly tied to NRS business functions:

  1. To create and maintain a standard set of base spatial data. For example, roads, hydrology, and terrain. With the goal of progressively making this information open and accessible for use by all
  2. Providing assurance for the Provincial Crown land registries, and the information repositories of Provincial rights and obligations. Specifically Gator and the Integrated Land and Resource Registry (ILRR)
  3. Offering Crown land research expertise to other government agencies, both rights-granting and otherwise
  4. Offering a service for custom solutions to NRS business issues. This would include developing mapping products and visualization for avalanche awareness, and providing assistance to treaty teams, spatial design and project management support for clean energy projects just to name a few examples.

In short, if an NRS business area has any concerns about or interest in the concept of "place" then GeoBC is involved in some way. This would be either indirectly through the open provision of the authoritative base information or directly by involving mapping, analysis and land research specialists from the branch.

Fondée en 1882, la Corporation des arpenteurs-géomètres du Québec devient l'Ordre des arpenteurs-géomètres du Québec en 1974. L'Ordre a pour principale fonction d'assurer la protection du public par l'entremise de l'inspection professionnelle, la formation continue et la discipline. Il détermine également les normes de pratique et les règlements qui guident les membres dans leurs activités professionnelles.

L'Ordre regroupe l'ensemble des personnes habilitées à exercer de façon exclusive la profession d'arpenteur-géomètre au Québec. Il compte actuellement près de 1 000 membres. Il est administré par un Conseil d’administration constitué de quatorze administrateurs, dont trois sont nommés par l'Office des professions pour représenter le public.

Pour devenir membre de l'Ordre des arpenteurs-géomètres du Québec et obtenir un permis d'exercice de la profession, une personne doit satisfaire aux exigences établies par la Loi sur les arpenteurs-géomètres, dont notamment l'obtention d'un diplôme universitaire reconnu, la réussite d'examens d'admission et la réalisation d'un stage de formation.




 QPS is focused on system integration of survey sensors and the development of software applications used for a wide variety of applications, including, but not limited to: hydrographic surveys (bathymetry, habitat, etc.), sea-floor mapping, portable pilot units and Electronic Navigation Charts (ENC) production. The key technology of QPS is based on precise navigation, the collection and presentation of large volumes of navigation and depth/elevation data. This also includes new techniques for 3D visualization and analysis of environmental-based disparate data sets. QPS navigation and positioning software is used on board offshore construction vessels, pipe-lay barges, drilling rigs, seismic research vessels, hydrographic survey vessels, land based survey vehicles, autonomous vehicles, etc. QPS' suite of products, QINSy, Qimera and Fledermaus, provide customers wih a total geomatic workflow from acquisition to visualization.

The Surveys Section is part of the Provincial Programs Branch within the Operations Division of Environment and Parks, Government of Alberta. The Section is managed by the Director of Surveys who is an Alberta Land Surveyor and is designated as the Director by the Minister of Environment and Parks. In addition, the Director of Surveys is the Alberta Boundary Commissioner as designated by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, Alberta.


It is through the Director of Surveys that the Minister administers the Surveys Act and the Boundary Surveys Act. Under the Surveys Act, the Director of Surveys is responsible for co-ordinating the establishment, maintenance and preservation of the provincial land survey system and for providing the provincial geodetic spatial referencing system. Under the Boundary Surveys Act, the Director of Surveys (i.e., the Alberta Boundary Commissioner) is responsible for any survey and demarcation of the boundary line between Alberta and any adjoining province or the Northwest Territories. These responsibilities are accomplished through the Land Surveys and Geodetic Control programs.

Key elements of the Land Surveys program are administration of legislation, monitoring surveying standards, provision of advisory services, and information management. Key elements of the Geodetic Control program are management of the geodetic spatial referencing system, distribution of related data, implementation of spatial referencing design alternatives, and liaison with stakeholders. Also, while the Director of Surveys has no direct responsibility for management of activities related to Public Land dispositions, the Director does play an ancillary role in defining standards for surveys carried out for Public Land dispositions.

The Underhill Group of Companies has its origin in the partnership of two Land Surveyors—F. Claire and James T. Underhill. The partnership, Underhill & Underhill, was formed in 1912 and operates to this day providing cadastral land survey services in British Columbia.

In the 1950s, Underhill Engineering Ltd. was established to meet a growing need for civil engineering services. Over the years, the business of Underhill Engineering Ltd. became increasingly focused on surveying (engineering, geodetic, GPS, general consulting) and mapping (cadastral, topographic, GIS, AM/FM). The industry we now find ourselves in has come to be known as geomatics. In 1998, Underhill Engineering Ltd. was renamed Underhill Geomatics Ltd. to reflect the focus of the business.

In 1969, Underhill opened an office in Whitehorse, Yukon to better serve northern Canada. Since 1986 our firm has performed approximately 90 First Nations land claim surveys, making Underhill Geomatics Ltd. the leading land claim survey firm in Canada.

Underhill’s pioneering efforts in the development and applications of geomatics technology are numerous. Underhill was an early adopter of a number of technologies which are now commonplace. British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is one of BC’s largest post-secondary institutions. BCIT offers courses and programs in applied and natural sciences, business and media, computing, engineering, health sciences and trades.


Land Surveying and Mapping courses have been offered at BCIT since it was established in 1964. The BCIT Geomatics Department continues to offer a two-year Diploma in Geomatics with the choice of either pursuing a career in the Geomatics industry upon graduation or continuing for a further two years of study toward the Bachelor of Technology:

Students with previous related post-secondary experience can apply for advanced placement into the second year of the diploma by taking three pre-entry surveying courses during July and August.


In addition to full-time courses, the Geomatics Department also offers part-time studies courses, allowing students to take individual courses at their own pace. A number of the online courses available from BCIT have been granted exemptions by the Canadian Board of Examiners for Professional Surveyors (CBEPS).

"Canadian GIS & Geomatics (CanadianGIS.com) has been helping people locate Canadian geospatial information since 2005. What started out as an online location to store hard to find resources for an applied geomatics research project at COGS, eventually evolved into a popular web portal containing valuable geographic information from Newfoundland to British Columbia while helping to promote the Canadian Geomatics Industry.

The site features information covering a range of Canadian geomatics related topics including data sources, web mapping, education programs, employment, historical cartography, networking groups, professional organizations, industry news and more. One of the more popular sections on the site has been the Canadian data section that now contains over 100 freely available Canadian data sources. Through the help of people all across Canada combined with various expanding social networks, new sources of geospatial information continues to be added, featured and shared every week.

CanadianGIS.com publishes press releases, provides an interactive conference calendar to promote networking opportunities and have recently added a Canadian Geospatial Directory to include information about companies and organizations in geo related disciplines (from GIS to surveying) or associated with the geomatics industry.

Département de géomatique


Le Cégep Limoilou est un collège d’enseignement général et technique situé dans la ville de  Québec. Il offre depuis 45 ans une formation technique en géomatique par le biais de deux voies de spécialisation que sont l’information géospatiale et la cartographie ainsi que l’arpentage et la géodésie. Ces programmes sont d’une durée de trois ans chacun.


Le Cégep Limoilou est le seul cégep dans l’Est-du-Québec à offrir le programme et le seul du Québec à offrir les deux voies de spécialisation de la géomatique. Il offre à la fois un tronc commun permettant d’acquérir à la fois la polyvalence et l’efficacité dans sa spécialité recherchée en entreprise.


Le département de géomatique offre :

  • une expertise de la géomatique reconnue internationalement (Brésil, Tunisie, Pérou, Sénégal, Tanzanie);
  • des laboratoires, des logiciels spécialisés et des équipements à la fine pointe de la technologie;
  • la possibilité de vivre une session d’études au Pérou (DEC Monde).

Le technicien en géomatique diplômé du Cégep Limoilou est un spécialiste du traitement de l’information à caractère géographique. Il est en mesure de procéder avec compétence et efficacité aux différentes étapes du processus géomatique (acquisition, structuration, stockage, traitement et diffusion de données géospatiales). Il se démarque par sa capacité à traiter ces données, quelle que soit la voie de spécialisation choisie dans son programme.


Au terme de sa formation de trois ans, il peut mettre à profit ses capacités dans les petites et grandes entreprises de géomatique ou de cartographie des secteurs privé, public et parapublic. Les bureaux d’arpentage ont aussi recours à ses compétences ainsi que les entreprises qui doivent gérer une information à caractère géographique ou réaliser des produits géomatiques divers, des cartes et des plans.

Issu de l’École d’arpentage créée en 1907, le Département des sciences géomatiques a su constamment adapter ses activités de formation et de recherche. Dès 1986, il offre le premier programme de géomatique au monde! Les étudiants inscrits au Département des sciences géomatiques bénéficient d’un milieu de formation et de recherche exceptionnel. In a world where a growing human population is placing increasing burdens on resources and the environment, technology has a critical role to play.  Ocean technology is of particular interest given the pivotal role of the oceans in all aspects of human existence – from commerce, to sustenance, to climate.
The Marine Institute School of Ocean Technology is mandated to undertake education, training and applied research and development programs in various aspects of ocean technology.  The School is particularly committed to delivering education and training programs that meet the needs of the ocean sector (industry, academia and government) in Canada, and beyond.
Education and Training Programs offered by the School of Ocean Technology include:

The Geographic Information Systems-Geospatial Management (GIS-GM) Postgraduate Certificate program, Niagara College, is a one-year program, providing leading-edge training in advanced geospatial management and the latest geospatial technology. The program prepares individuals to be trained geospatial experts within their chosen field, such as environmental management, natural resources conservation, urban planning, business, and industry sectors.

Of particular interest are the internship opportunities (the applied GIS thesis projects) that form the cornerstone of the program. Learners receive invaluable experience through learning how to design, plan, implement, and manage a real-world GIS project with real clients while completing their postgraduate certificates.

Emphasis in the program is given to the latest technology in GIS, remote sensing, GPS, Internet mapping, geodatabase management and administration, and 3D visualization, using a variety of proprietary software (ArcGIS site license, MapInfo, Manifold, AutoDesk, ERDAS etc.) and open source software (MySQL, Web Map Server, etc.)

This is an intensive program consisting of three semesters (14, 10, and 10 weeks) that commence in September and end in June of the following year. A total of 17 courses are delivered via more than 700 contact hours as a part of the successful completion of the certificate. As this is an applied certificate, all classes are delivered in a ‘hands-on’ format, which combines lecture, demo, and class exercise delivery methods, in our designated 24/7 GIS lab.

COGS is a specialized technology campus of the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) and it has been providing Geomatics related training since 1948. The Centre is an internationally recognized training facility in the field of applied geography. The facility, located in the heart of the Annapolis Valley, is dedicated to Geomatics and is supported by an experienced faculty, modern, up-do-date equipment, computer labs and current versions of most Geomatics software.


COGS offers a new two year diploma in Geographic Sciences. Students will do a foundation year with broad exposure to geographic decision making and Geomatics tools followed by a chosen second year concentration in Cartography, Community and Environmental Planning, GIS, or Remote Sensing Technologies. COGS offers surveying training with Survey Technician and Geomatics Engineering Technology programs.

For students with previous diplomas and degrees, the Centre offers advanced diploma programs in Geographic Sciences and Marine Geomatics. Students in the Advanced Geographic Sciences Diploma can specialize in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, and GIS for Business. Graduates from our Advanced Diplomas may also be eligible to continue on in a joint Masters in Applied Geomatics with Acadia University. Credits are also recognized at other learning institutions, including St. Francis Xavier University, Dalhousie University and the University of New Brunswick.

The NSCC and COGS also host the Applied Geomatics Research Group (AGRG) which was founded in January 2000. AGRG began by using Geomatics tools for environmental research in the Annapolis Valley and since then research has expanded to include global partners from the private and public sectors. Today the entire gamut of geomatics technologies is employed to conduct vital environmental research, and create economic opportunity by partnering with innovative organizations and private industries. University graduates or young scientists can further their education with the research group through industry internships, joint M.Sc. degrees or practicums and workshops.

The School of Renewable Resources at Selkirk College is the home to four diverse environmental science programs that are designed to prepare you for a rewarding career and lifestyle. Each is respected across Canada for offering quality instruction, innovative technology, and practical experience in environmental science disciplines. Additionally the school oversees the operation of the Selkirk Geospatial Research Centre, a national center of excellence in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing Technologies.

Starting in the fall of 2007, students were able to enrol in a new Bachelor of Geographic Information Systems Degree that provides excellent opportunities for continuing education and skill development. Students from all four diploma programs are eligible, along with interested individuals from outside the school with suitable qualifications.

Our academic offerings are delivered in one bachelor’s degree, one advanced diploma, and three nationally-accredited technical diploma programs:

Applied research is another primary focus of the school’s operation. The Selkirk Geospatial Research Centre has been involved with numerous partnerships investigating a variety of geomatic problems. Some examples of completed projects include wildfire intensity mapping using remotely sensed data, prescribed burning prioritisation, aboriginal value databases, avalanche hazard mapping, and community asset mapping.

  • GIS Applications Specialist(2 semester, post-diploma certificate program)This post-graduate, eight-month program uses high-end technology tools to collect, store, manipulate, analyze, interpret, and communicate geographic information within a variety of disciplines. A post-graduation internship option allows students to work for host companies and earn an additional credit plus valuable work experience.

Customized training is offered for government, business, and industry professionals seeking opportunities to upgrade existing skills or learn new ones, for example, web-based geomatics applications. Training sessions are designed to meet the specific needs of the participants. Courses can be customized from a mix of disciplines including:

  • Surveying/GPS
  • Cartography

Training sessions are developed using a variety of software applications and datasets that are tailored to the client’s needs. The Geomatics Institute at Fleming offers both on-site and off-site training opportunities, with a “mobile lab” available to bring training sessions to your workplace.



The Department of Geomatics Engineering offers an integrated approach to the acquisition, analysis, storage, distribution, management, and use of spatially-referenced data. It embraces the traditional areas of geodesy, photogrammetry, precise engineering surveys, cadastral and hydrography, as well as new fields such as spatial/geospatial information systems (SIS/GIS), location navigation and positioning, and remote sensing.


The Department has 21 full-time faculty members, a CRC/iCORE Chair in Wireless Location, and a CRC in Mobile Multi-Sensor Geomatics Systems. Undergraduate students normally enter the department after completing an 18-month common core program. Graduate students enter the program after completing a B.Sc. in Geomatics Engineering or an equivalent degree in a related discipline. They may enroll in one of four specialization areas: Earth Observation, Positioning Navigation and Wireless Location, Digital Imaging Systems, and GIS and Land Tenure.

The graduate program has a strong international component and its graduates are in high demand in industry. The Department is internationally recognized for the excellence of its researchers, and has been highly successful in raising research funds. Currently funded projects include wireless location positioning and navigation, integration of positioning technology with airborne and land-based remote sensors, geoid studies, application of GIS to hydrology, development of mobile information systems, uncertainty modelling in spatial data, and industrial metrology. Most of the projects have a strong knowledge transfer component, and a number of successful software license agreements have resulted from previous research. The Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering (GGE) offers three undergraduate degrees in Geomatics: Geomatics Engineering, a Bachelor in Geomatics and a Diploma Certificate. The first two programs are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) and by the Canadian Board of Examiners for Professional Surveyors (CBEPS). More details can be found in our website. Our undergraduate programs have seen an increase in interest with a double in intake in the past years. Our graduate programs, the Ph.D., the (research-based) Master of Science in Engineering, and the (course-based) Master in Engineering continue strong and with a steady intake of students. The department has embarked in offering online courses, with two GIS courses being already offered, and others under preparation.  Highlights in terms of research groups. The Ocean Mapping Group continues to sail the seven rivers and the seven seas, including discovering uncharted passages in the Arctic. Geodetic Research Laboratory continues with its contributions in geodesy and GNSS. The two research chairs, in Remote Sensing and in Big data and Data Mobility continue hard at work with increasing visibility and level of research. The GIS group leader has just published two books in GIS and continues with research in GIS applications. UNB’s GGE students are exposed to the latest concepts and technologies, and provided with a solid foundation of knowledge and inquiry upon which they can build sustainable careers. Since 1961, more than 1 000 students from 56 countries have graduated from our programs after making their own unique contributions to university life in Fredericton, New Brunswick. As well, GGE faculty and students have made important international contributions in everything from satellite positioning and earthquake prediction, through to mapping and remote sensing, engineering surveys, geographic information systems, land administration, and ocean mapping.

The Geomatics Engineering program within the Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering at York University is the newest four-year Geomatics Engineering program in Canada. The program is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board within the new School of Engineering of York University. The program offers a comprehensive B.Sc. degree in Geomatics Engineering, sharing a common first year with all other engineering programs, and embracing in later years the integrated teaching of the disciplines of geodesy, metrology, photogrammetry and remote sensing, GIS, and spatial data analysis and management. Students benefit from the use of modern facilities training with new, advanced equipment partaking in the highly successful internship program and enjoying numerous, high-quality employment opportunities upon completion of their degree. Through the Faculty of Science and Engineering, students also benefit from the interdisciplinary teaching and research in both the undergraduate and graduate programs.


Masters and doctoral degrees are also offered within the strengths of geodynamics, gravimetry, satellite and inertial precise positioning and navigation, GIS, and terrestrial, airborne and satellite imaging and ranging research, supported by substantial external research grants and contracts.

The program has grown substantially with the recent increase of the number of full faculty members. The School of Engineering is planning for significant growth in the coming years through expansion of existing programs and the introduction of new ones.
