Invitation to participate in the Geomatics Speakers Series at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
The Vancouver Branch of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics is inviting speakers from the private sector and government agencies to speak to the Geomatics Student about topics applicable to their future careers. We need 8 speakers for this program. Please let me know if you are interested in being a speaker. The program is an opportunity for you talk about an interesting project, program or career. This program brings the Geomatics professionals to the BCIT campus and offers the Geomatics students insight into their future profession.
Past speakers from Telus and Terasen gave presentations on Geographic Information Systems. The Association of BC Land Surveyors talked about how to obtain a land surveyor’s commission. The Land Title and Survey Authority spoke about Crown Land surveys and treaties in BC, and the Canadian Hydrographic Service gave presentations on offshore surveys. Mapping firms and land surveying companies gave presentations on interesting projects and the application of new technology. Equipment suppliers demonstrated the newest models of GPS and total stations.
I am inviting you to participate in this program as a speaker. If you are able to make a presentation to the Geomatics students, please let me know so that we can schedule the speakers for the next two semesters, Sept 2012 to April 2013, for the BCIT Geomatics Program. We need 8 presenters.

CIG Speaker Series at BCIT
Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011
Location: BCIT Campus in Burnaby:
Theatre Room SW3-1710 @ 15:30 to 16:20
Speaker: Mike Thompson, P.Eng, FEC
Mike Thompson graduated from the University of Calgary in 1988. He worked for several mapping companies before he and Nick Dudley formed Dudley Thompson Mapping Corp. in 2006. Using the latest technologies in hardware and software they are equipped to handle a large range of mapping projects such as;
Topic: A Bit of Old and New
Mapping Ancient Roads using Photogrammetry &
the Technology of Mobile Mapping Systems
Mike will present a method to provide evidence of the existence, or non-existence of roads or other cultural data using aerial photography dating back into the 1920’s. With this evidence a surveyor can petition the courts to render a decision on the position of the road and if the road and right of way are in violation of any previous or standing agreements.
He will then delve into the most exciting technology to hit the survey and mapping community since digital Photogrammetry in the late 1980’s. Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS) using vehicle mounted lasers and integrated with GPS and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) technology. These systems provide an extremely fast and accurate way to record as-built information for mapping and analysis.
