We are seeking a highly skilled Geomatics Engineer to join our dynamic team as the Project Leader directing and controlling the establishment, maintenance, and preservation of Alberta's provincial reference system. As the Project Leader, you will coordinate and provide leadership to a team of professionals, collaborating with various government departments, land surveyors, and the public to ensure the integrity and functionality of our geodetic spatial referencing system.
 
In this role, you will strategically apply surveying legislation and policies to develop and support our geodetic positioning and mapping systems. Effective client service and strong project management skills are essential as you collaborate closely with the Director of Surveys to manage operations and deliver sound geomatics engineering solutions. You will coordinate and facilitate strategies related to spatial referencing design alternatives, communicate these strategies to internal and external stakeholders, and provide support to municipalities and others for maintaining the Alberta geodetic spatial referencing system.

Additionally, you will maintain and update the Multipurpose Alberta Survey Control Operations and Tasks (MASCOT) survey system and provide technical support to internal and external clients on issues related to geo-positioning. As a representative of the Government of Alberta, you will actively participate at provincial and national levels on various issues related to surveying, geodesy, and mapping. You will also provide supervision and leadership to the Geodetic Control Unit Technologists to ensure effective management of the unit and contribute to its ongoing success.

This position is part of the Land Use and Geospatial Unit which includes land use planning, GIS services, and agricultural land use inventory (ALUI). ALUI provides the current and accurate land cover and land use information that is a prerequisite for responsible and effective management of BC’s agricultural land.

The Remote Sensing Specialist is the scientific and technical authority on remote sensing and geospatial applications within the ministry.  This position provides leadership to a professional team of geospatial specialists to identify, design and develop tools and processes to increase the predictive accuracy and efficiency of land classification for agricultural applications, conducts research and development to leverage remote sensing and other advanced and emerging geospatial technologies and incorporate proven automation techniques into land classification processes, and collaborates with a diverse team of agrologists, engineers, land use planners, and others to maximize the potential of remote sensing to address the information needs of the branch and ministry.

Qualifications for this role include:
• A Master's degree from a recognized* post-secondary institution in a related field and at least four (4) years of current and progressively advanced related professional experience; OR,
• Bachelor’s degree from a recognized* post-secondary institution in a related field and at least six (6) years of current and progressively advanced related professional experience.

This position maximizes the potential of geospatial and information technologies – specifically remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), imagery, thermal, multi-spectral, and LiDAR - to support the Remote Sensing & Geodetic Engineering section at GeoBC and the NRM RPAS Program’s clients and business objectives.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in geomatics, resource management, geography, computer science, or related area.
  • Experience developing and managing large spatial and attribute data sets and experience with database management tools and applications.
  • Experience developing methodologies and performing custom geospatial data modelling, complex analysis, and interpretations.
  • Holds an Advanced Pilot Certificate, Small Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), Visual line-of-sight (VLOS), issue by Transport Canada. Proof of certification will be requested.
