The Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 Presented by Marc Véronneau Natural Resources Canada Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has released the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 (CGVD2013), which is now the new reference standard for heights across Canada. This new height reference system is replacing the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1928 (CGVD28), which was adopted officially by an Order in Council in 1935. CGVD2013 is defined by the equipotential surface that best represents coastal mean sea level around North America, according to an agreement reached between the United States and Canada. This new vertical datum is realized by the CGG2013 geoid model, which provides the separation between the GRS80 ellipsoid and the selected equipotential surface in the NAD83 (CSRS) reference frame. Such a datum provides a direct connection to heights measured with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) technologies, such as GPS. The heights of existing benchmarks are also available in CGVD2013. These heights were obtained by re-adjusting the entire federal firstorder levelling network. CGVD2013 heights obtained by combining GNSS ellipsoidal heights and CGG2013 geoid undulations will This presentation will review the evolution of the CGVD28 network, highlight the technical advances that made possible the realization of CGVD2013 and summarize the differences users should expect when migrating to the new datum. The widespread growth in popularity of consumer and mass-market oriented Web maps has shown the immense value of having access to current, high quality online map information in support of decision making. Professional GIS users and knowledge workers who support mission-critical applications in government agencies, industry and academic institutions also require ready access to consistent online data and maps. To meet this need Esri Canada developed the Canada Community Map, which provides a cost-effective and efficient framework for Canadian organizations to share their geographic information with other professionals and with the online public. It is a high-performance application; has Canada-wide coverage; is derived from authoritative sources; is up to date; and is of high cartographic quality. The program currently has over 100 participating Canadian organizations, with a goal of 1000 plus organizations participating by 2017. The seamless national map is also rendered with uniform cartography, cached and integrated into the World Topographic Map on ArcGIS Online. This presentation will explain what the Esri Canada Community Map program is, how it works, what are the benefits of participation and will demonstrate some uses of the interactive online map.

Real Time Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Networks
Presented by: Mike Strutt
Real Time Network Administrator, Topcon Positioning Systems, Inc
GPS is a mature technology that supports services ranging from navigation and timing to sophisticated weaponry. As precise real time kinetic (RTK) GPS enters its third decade, the emergence and proliferation of Real Time Networks (RTN) is having a major impact on the Geomatics, Construction and Agriculture industries.
RTN’s consist of a collection of GNSS receivers linked together over the internet and managed by software located at a central processing site. By connecting to this network, surveyors, engineers, GIS professionals and machine operators (bulldozers, graders, planters/fertilizers/ harvesters) can improve productivity and profitability while realizing sensor precisions ranging from sub-meter to centimetre.
This presentation will describe the technology, applications, accuracy, advantages and distribution of real time GNSS reference networks in Canada.
//

KABOOM
By - Ron Gould
Date: Wednesday June 15, 2011
Time: Cash bar: 6:00 PM, Dinner: 6:30 PM.
Twice now, Ron Gould has blown up an airplane in Ottawa. Actually it was all for science, and visitors from many agencies in a number of countries travelled here to see it happen. It was invitation only, but now the CIG Ottawa Branch is inviting you to hear about it too. Ron will describe how he and his team developed the idea, then planned and executed KABOOM and KABOOM2 at the NRC's Uplands Campus next to the airport. Explosives, Emergency Services, high speed imagery, aerial imagery and remote sensing, and mobile LiDAR were all ingredients used in the KABOOM project. Ron will talk about the data they collected and what they learned. Join us for this unusual, unique and very interesting discussion on Life Members Night.

CIG Ottawa Branch Presents
Cybercartography in the context of contemporary mapping
Sébastien Caquard
Geomatics and Cartographic Research Center – Carleton University
The world of maps and mapping is being rapidly transformed. Recent technological developments have brought maps into the daily life of societies all over the world in unprecedented ways. The entire domain of mapmaking is experiencing a profound change in the way maps (re)produce territories. This change is the result of developments in industry, the open source community, community based initiatives as well as in academia, science and art. Cybercartography aims to capture and build on this diversity and to further explore the changing nature of maps. In January 2003 a multidisciplinary research team at Carleton University in Ottawa began to further develop a foundational paradigm for cybercartography. This paradigm will be presented and discussed, illustrated by examples developed in the context of the Cybercartography and the New Economy project.

Ted Lawson
Sergeant, 1st Canadian Field Airsurvey Company, WWII
Sergent, 1ère compagnie canadienne de levées aériennes de campagne
( II-ième Guerre Mondiale)
Mapping the Front: Military Mapping in WWII
Cartographier le front: la cartographie militaire pendant la II-ième Guerre Mondiale
A brief outline of how military maps were made in WWII by the Royal Canadian Engineers, 1st Canadian Corps Field Survey Company. The subject matter is from memory and the thankful blessing that details of the day were documented by Senior Officers. Ted remembers: They were all hand-drawn maps. Our unit did 450 of them as we made our way to Holland. We had trucks set up with printing presses in the back of them, to get the maps out to the field commanders as quick as possible. You could tell, by what they wanted printed as a map, where the next battles would be taking place. We were never far behind them. (quote from Ron Corbett’s Ottawa Citizen article, May 12th 2003)
