The Canadian Institute of Geomatics, Ottawa Branch would like to invite you to come honour the Branch’s Life Member’s at our annual Life Member’s Night and Dinner which will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at the Restaurant International, Algonquin College.
This event will feature a presentation by Jean Thie of EcoInformatics International, entitled Ecosystem Based Image Analysis and How to Find the World’s Largest Beaver Dam. In his presentation, Jean will provide us with examples of 80 years of environmental monitoring of permafrost and beaver habitat in Canada’s North.

| Jean will take you back 90 years, from the amazing images provided by ‘Canada’s Flying Canoes’, to the rapid innovations coming from remotes sensing and GIS. While the technologies of Remote Sensing and GIS open a new world of automated analysis, ecosystem knowledge provides the most surprising key to highest value-image analysis. With examples of 80 years of environmental monitoring of permafrost and beaver habitat, he will open a new perspective on Canada’s North. The BBC’s “Earth from Space” is using some of these images in a new TV series. |

Jean vous ramènera 90 ans en arrière, à partir des images étonnantes fournies par “Chasse-Galerie” du Canada', jusqu'aux innovations rapides provenant de la télédétection et du SIG. Alors que les technologies de la télédétection et des SIG ouvrent un nouveau monde d'analyse automatisée, la connaissance de l'écosystème fournit la clé la plus surprenante pour l'analyse d'images de la plus haute valeur. Avec des exemples de 80 années de surveillance environnementale de l'habitat du pergélisol et du castor, il ouvrira une nouvelle perspective sur le Nord canadien. La "Earth from Space" de la BBC utilise certaines de ces images dans une nouvelle série télévisée.

| Jean Thie holds a Forestry degree (1966) from the Netherlands and an MSc (Soils - Remote Sensing) from the University of Manitoba (1976). He did post graduate work in photo interpretation and image analysis at the International Training Center for Aerial Survey and Earth Science in Delft (1969) and the Laboratory for the Application of Remotes Sensing (LARS) Purdue University (1971). |
